BBM is 10 years old today. According to the book "Losing The Signal," the messaging service was developed by three BlackBerry employees who were looking for something to do following a 10% cut in the company's head count. When the service launched on August 1st 2005, smartphones meant BlackBerry and BlackBerry meant smartphones. A lot has happened over this decade. BBM is now available on all major platforms and is more than just a texting service.
For the rest of today, BlackBerry is giving away a free "Happy Birthday BBM" sticker pack from the BBM Store. Click on the sourcelink to grab the free stickers. If you're using your BlackBerry10 device to obtain the free stickers, you will need to set the browser to mobile view.
BlackBerry has been working hard to monetize BBM including running ads in the BBM Channels discussion groups. As of October, the latest month that we have this data for, BBM had 91 monthly active members including new iOS and Android users.
Blow out the candles on your cake, BBM. Hope you wished for big growth over the next ten years.
